Modern Form Of Bullying : Cyberbullying

Social media apps and sites have become a circadian necessity in human lives. The more people are using social media the more it is growing. The more it is developing the more it is creating an impact in society. Everything comes with its drawbacks and so do social media and the internet. Some drawbacks include online harassment, stalking, cyberbullying and scams. 

India as a country stands 3rd in Cyberbullying in the world. Amid the covid-19 pandemic, cyberbullying escalated. About stay at home orders, research shows cyberbullying increased 70% and toxicity on online gaming platforms increased 40%. 

Do you know that a total of 37% of parents in India, which was the highest in the world, said that their child was cyberbullied? Globally on average over half of the youngsters and teens have been bullied online. More than one in three young people have experienced online bullying and this number is increasing each day.

So, what is Cyberbullying?
Cyberbullying is a kind of bullying, harassment, intimidation or stalking using online platforms such as social media sites, websites, gaming apps etc. It has become more and more common notably among teenagers as the digital domain has expanded anonymously with the advancement of technology.One is said to be bullied only when someone shares something negative to harm the other person’s reputation. Cyberbullying is done by creating a website and posting atrocious pictures of a person which could harm their reputation. It is so dangerous that it gives the ability to harass anyone in public at any time and most students are the victims of this kind of harassment. 
The sad and tragic consequence of cyberbullying on the victims could be that these victims may experience depression, increased suicidal tendencies, lower self-esteem and a range of negative responses. Internet trolling is a common form of bullying that takes place online to provoke an extreme reaction or it could be for sadistic pleasure.

How to avoid Cyberbullying?
There is no foolproof way to prevent yourself from ever being cyberbullied, there are some things that you can do together to reduce the chances of being targeted.

• Keep Personal Stuff Private.
Never share your information with a stranger on social media.
• Use Privacy settings.
Protect your accounts and devices by using Passwords.
Manage location sharing. 
Check before posting that your post does no have your location geotags.
Think before posting any content on social media.
Always log out when using public devices, simply closing tabs is not enough. 
Never respond to cyberbullies.
