"Nature shrinks as capital grows. The growth of the market cannot solve the very crisis it creates."
These words by Vandana Shiva explains the reality of the world in the 21st century. This is the time of technology and advancement. What was once the latest and greatest yesterday, is old hat today. With the ever-changing technology and gadgets comes the problem of e-waste. Electronic waste, commonly called e-waste, is a fast-growing component of our daily solid waste stream. Many electronics contain elements – lead, mercury, and cadmium, for example – that are safe when the items are used as directed but can be hazardous if disposed of in household trash and compacted at landfills. According to the Global E-waste Monitor 2017, published by the United Nations University, India is one of the biggest producers of e-waste in the world. India generates about 2 million tonnes of e-waste annually and ranks fifth among e-waste producing countries, after the US, China, Japan, and Germany.
SATARK, the consumer club of P.G.D.A.V. College in collaboration with E-parisara organized an e-waste collection drive from 29th October to 1st November to create awareness among the students about the proper disposal of e-waste on the environment. Along with this drive, a Knowledge sharing session was also organized to make students understand the concept of e-waste and its effect on living beings. Posters and banners were also displayed on the college campus to encourage the students to participate actively to make this planet a better place to live. The items collected in this e-waste collection drive included mobile phones, earphones, data cables, calculators, headphones etc. With the support not only from students but also the teachers of the college, SATARK was able to collect significant amount of waste which will be delivered to E-parisara for safe disposal & recycling.
It's high time we start thinking about the needs of our future generation. Conserving and sustaining the environment is an important need of the hour. Various schemes and programs like Swachch Bharat, Digital India, and Smart City are launched by the government to preserve our environment and resources for future concerns. We should also come ahead and take our duties as the inhabitants of the planet seriously and work hard to save it from further damage due to our greed.
