"You have to hold yourself accountable for your actions, and that’s how we’re going to protect the Earth." – Julia Butterfly Hill
A green consumer is the consumer who is quite aware about his/her responsibility to protect the environment by selectively purchasing green products or services. A green consumer tries to maintain a healthy and safe lifestyle without endangering the sustainability of the planet and the future of mankind.
HOW TO BE A GREEN CONSUMER
- Saving energy consumption in your surroundings
An aware consumer can save energy at personal level which involves switching off lights and replacing light bulbs, reducing water heating expenses, and installation of energy efficient windows.
- Change of mindset
Each and every person should change their mindset regarding green conservation and know the hazards of environmental degradation by taking a regular green habit.
- Use of solar products and renewable energy resources
The major way to prevent environmental depletion is through
the use of solar products that rely on the sun’s energy rather than
electricity. Despite the fact that some of these products cost more than traditional
products, they tend to be more environmentally friendly and last longer.
One can simply become a green consumer by recycling and using eco-friendly products. Small daily actions would limit the waste. Actions should be taken by a green consumer are clothes made from recycled fabric, sustainable shopping bags, use of stainless-steel water bottles, led bulbs to name a few.
- Purchasing a hybrid car
Consumers should purchase hybrid cars. Using hybrid cars relieves the environment from extreme carbon emission that is a primary contributor to climate change and global warming.
IMPORTANCE OF GREEN CONSUMERISM
- Reduced waste in packaging.
Green consumerism has brought a significant reduction in packaging waste as it encourages reuse of paper and plastic packaging bags and tins that often cause environmental degradation.
- Increased energy efficiency.
Attitudes of green consumerism advocate for the most efficient use of energy which eventually helps in saving money, reducing utility bills, and many more. Via green consumerism, environmental and economic benefits of utility systems, as well as the management of risk associated with inefficient production processes, have also been achieved.
- Decreased release of emissions and other pollutants during production and transportation process.
Because of green consumerism, there is a remarkable decrease in the release of emissions and other pollutants during the production and transportation process. Also, as a result of green consumerism advocacies and its programs, stringent standards against emission have been put in place hence lowering emissions from engines and motors and the advancement of clean burning fuel options.
- Consumption of more healthy food.
Because of green consumerism, people are gradually developing a culture of buying more organic and local food, which is comparatively healthier as they are not cultivated or produced using artificial chemical fertilizers, antibiotics, hormones, or pesticides.
CONCLUSION
A consumer must consume those particular products which do
not cause harm to our environment. Excessive use of plastic bags is one example
which has caused serious damage to the environment. Consumers should use
biodegradable products which can easily mix with soil and water after they are
dumped. Moreover, consumers should save electricity, gas etc. by judicious use.
The use of public transport systems and eco-friendly vehicles should be
considered by consumers.
