Next Version Of Aadhaar: One Digital ID

The central government appears to be working on a replacement for the Aadhaar Card. According to The Indian Express' assessment of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology's (MeitY) proposed plan, the government is working on a new model of "Federated Digital Identities'' that will link multiple digital IDs such as driving licences, passport numbers, PAN numbers, Aadhaar, and so on into one.

The One Digital ID, like the Aadhaar card number, is stated to be issued in the form of a unique ID. The government hopes to create a new digital architecture that is "interlinked and interoperable" with the Federal Digital Identity.

One Digital ID card: What is it?
According to the suggested idea, a citizen will be "empowered" by the umbrella digital identity since it "puts her in control of various identities and gives her the choice of choosing which one to employ for what purpose."

The Federal Digital Identity will also function as a one-stop shop for storing Central and State-related ID data, according to the study. It's also likely to be used for know-your-customer (KYC) or eKYC (electronic know-your-customer) procedures.

The suggested concept has been transferred under the India Enterprise Architecture (IndEA) 2.0, according to the article. To recall, the goal of IndEA 2.0 was to bring together government and business organisations in order to simplify online identification operations.

The proposal is expected to be available in the public domain soon and the Ministry could seek comments by the end of February.

Is security a concern?
The one digital ID is likely to cause concerns with digital security. We've recently seen scammers utilise Aadhaar and KYC to mislead unsuspecting customers into handing over their hard-earned cash. Users have been warned about such internet scams by the government and banking organisations.
According to security experts, with the growing reliance on the internet, scammers are leaving no stone unturned in their attempts to deceive internet users. KYC and OTP are two of the most popular types of internet scams these days.
