An initiative towards the problem of water scarcity in Delhi

"For every drop of water you waste, you must know that somewhere on earth someone is desperately looking for a drop of water!"

Water, being one of the most precious, essential resources which is vital for sustainability but limited in availability as well.

Being needed by every organism in the world from tiny insects to the blue whales, humans, plants and the existence of every organism is with the presence of water.

The reason for necessity of water may differs from organism to organism but the vary existence of the world is ensured with the amount of water available in the world.

The term scarcity of water has come up because of inefficient use of water and here we are discussing about Delhi's water scarcity.

To cope up with the issue of scarcity of water in Delhi, Delhi Jal Board has strictly warned that wastage of water and illegal connections will not be tolerated.

 According to Indian Express:-

Vice chairman of Delhi Jal Board asked officials to prepare a plan for a month long vigilance campaign.

Overflowing water tanks and misuse of water for any purposes are to be strictly monitored by all those members who have given this authority to check.

Delhi Jal Board says:- If troubles by the twins persist then there will be low supply from the Yamuna and the progressive reduction in water flow from the upper Ganga canal.

More than a quarter of Delhi's water need comes from the canal which feeds both the Bhagirathi and Sonia Vihar treatment plants.

Now the canal is supplying only 100MGD (million gallon per day) instead of 265MGD due to annual maintenance work.

With the help of nine water treatment plants Delhi generates around 930 MCD of portable water supply, out of which 375 MGD comes from the Yamuna and its canal; 240 MGD from the Ganga Gangnahar; 220 MGD from Bhakhara storage rest is extracted from subsurface resources through rainy wells and tube wells.

Bhagirathi plant producers 108 MGD portable water while Sonia Vihar goes up to 140 MGD  portable water under normal circumstances. Both the major plants are fed by raw water from upper Ganga canal.

When operations at one plant are impacted under the normal situation, water is diverted and rationing from other plants to their command areas is carried out so that overall impact can be minimised as said by an official overseeing engineering operations.

DJB issued advisory that water may be available at low pressure in large parts of the city including parts of South Delhi, East Delhi, North East Delhi and some parts of NDMC area in coming days due to low availability of raw water. So, people must use water judiciously.

So, keeping all these points in mind , we must use water efficiently which means reducing wastage of water by measuring the amount of water required for a particular purpose and the amount of water used so that with the fulfillment of the needs of current generation it will be available for the future ones as well.
